Why Volunteer?
Everyone has benefited at some time in their life from the services of a volunteer, whether it was the services of a homeroom mom, a team dad, a band or athletic booster or someone who handed you water during a marathon. Or maybe the need was greater - maybe you had to evacuate to a storm shelter or received a blood donation, and there was a volunteer there to provide comfort or information. Maybe you are not the one in need anymore, or maybe you are. Either way, volunteering in your community helps to improve the quality of your community, gives you the opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills. |
I believe in giving back to my community, and I'm thinking there are a lot more like me. Many people like to volunteer in Northeast Florida, yet don't know how to get started. This page is designed to help you find a way to give back if that is your desire.
Whatever your ability you have to give of yourself, I've placed a few links to help you get started. These are a few organizations that can provide opportunities for volunteering, with a variety of services, schedules and skill needs. If you know of a worthy organization and do not see it posted, please contact me with your suggestion by clicking here!
And one last thing.....a personal request of mine is that we let our local and state school administrators, legislators and civic leaders understand how important the arts are in our schools. It is a proven fact that children who are given a creative outlet in school stay in school. If children are not given an opportunity to channel that creative energy in a positive way, they will find a way to channel the energy - and it may not be so positive.
In addition, music education - one of my soapboxes - also contributes to higher academic achievement in mathematics and reading. However, music education is dying in our schools. High school band programs are fed through middle school band programs, yet every year we see middle school band programs disappear and the size of high school band programs diminish. Please get involved and let those who can make a difference know that you want to keep music and the arts in our schools.
It's easy to make a buck. It's a lot tougher to make a difference. ~Tom Brokaw
